LARP Staves
Who says wizards can’t be technomancers?
So I wanted to build a staff for one of my characters…
So I made a few iterations because the first wasn’t quite spiffy enough, and then I made another, and then one for a friend… and that all got a bit out of hand…
So now I do commissions!
(as summarised by Marianne)
I’ve got some premade designs visible below, but I also do custom work. If you have inspiration images, please share them — choosing from existing options is cheaper, but I’m open to custom stuff of course. I can deliver these parts sanded and smoothed (and ready for primer), primed, or primed and varnished
How they work
The staves are powered by a power bank - the new models use an easily available one from Anker. One charge gives around 12–18 hours of runtime. I find rotating two power banks during an event - one in the staff, one on charge via another, larger powerbank - works well.
The staff connects to a pre-set WiFi network or, if that isn’t available, creates its own. You can control it via a built-in web interface on your phone.
I'm also working on a small-ish remote that can do all the things the web interface can do, and also has a low-power mode that allows you to use it to toggle macros - like switching colors or modes or turning the staff on and off. I find giving it to a GM enables some fun shenanigans ;)
And of course the on-off tapping - which can also be set to do other things!
Options for staves
Crystal types
Orb-based (blue in picture)
Pointed crystal (red)
Encapsulated straight crystal (green) - the hole in the center allows for a powerbank to be nested inside the crystal itself
I’m also working on a life-cast selenite pillar version, among others
Wood
I keep a selection in stock and have good access to a specialty wood supplier, so there's a lot we can do with this.
Options include sycamore (platane), bloodwood, ebonized oak, etc.
I find that choosing a style and color tends to naturally lead to a wood choice. The choice of wood does greatly affects the weight and the price, as it tends to be the part with the biggest price range with more rare woods of course tending to cost more.
Leather-wrapped handle
A takedown handle (splits in two) is possible, useful for transport. Most styles support it, although wrapped leather can sometimes look odd across the seam - using built-in decoration works better in that case.
Staff foot
The staff foot is where in most cases the powerbank is hidden. The black end cap is made of tpu - a rubber-like material, that is shock absorbing (for on-off tapping), and can be screwed off to enable switching powerbanks on the fly.
Extras
Extras include a wall mount and decorative rings.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
