Spalted Maple and Ebony compass box

Journey into discovery with the Spalted Maple and Ebony compass box, a poetic embodiment of nature's elegance and fine craftsmanship. Carefully brought to life from two squares of Spalted Maple, this box emanates an organic aura. The sides, made from thin Ebony, add a rich and luxurious contrast to the raw beauty of the Spalted Maple.

In crafting this artefact, the wood was first shaped into a single whole piece and then delicately sawn in half to form the box and lid. Each half harmoniously comes together to encapsulate the perfect home for a brass replica compass, exhibiting a marriage of functional design and visual appeal.

The venture into new territory with Ebony was both rewarding and insightful. Although it nurtured the confidence for future ebony projects, it also taught the nuances of handling this dark, dense wood and the importance of caution to avoid chipping.

A finish of hard wax oil enhances the contrasting hues of Spalted Maple and Ebony, bestowing the box with a subtle gleam. The resulting piece upholds both the natural charm of the raw materials as well as the finesse of the craft, marking it as an evocative specimen of my journey in woodworking.
