1910 style radio
Introducing the "Oberon," a delightful blend of aesthetics, nostalgia, and functionality. This meticulously crafted 1910 style radio serves as a whimsical prop for Live Action Role Play (LARP). Much more than just a visual treat, Oberon promises an immersive experience for users by actually playing music.
To begin with the frame, curved plywood with a veneer of European Walnut lends a classic touch to the structure. The faceplate, designed from spalted maple, boasts a striated splash of pattern, ornamented with a contrasting strip of European Walnut in the centre. Providing a balanced completion to the structure are the backplate and base, crafted from Korina, also known as white limba.
Added flair comes in the form of meticulously cut hardware, constructed from brass-filled PLA. This includes a charming type plate and an operational knob, enhancing the vintage aesthetic.
However, the beauty of Oberon isn't just skin-deep. Inside, it houses a speaker and amplifier that can be regulated by the volume knob. Powered by a power bank, the radio can seamlessly play music directly from Spotify using an old smartphone connected via a 3.5mm jack.
But what's in the name? "Oberon" borrows its fanciful title from the mythical realm of fairyland, a playful nod to the capricious patterns found in Spalted maple. It also subtly references the in-game corporation "De Obol Corporatie," adding yet another layer to its fanciful and intriguing character. This project is a testament to how modern technology can breathe life into classic designs, merging the best of both worlds.
